Your feet are as unique as you are. They can be long, short, narrow, wide, flat or arched, with long toes or short stubby ones. The way they move is also unique. They can be rigid or flexible; they can over-pronate (flatten out too much) or under-pronate (stay too rigid) when you walk. You can be a heel striker, a toe walker, walk pigeon-toed or a perfect, mid-foot striker. Some variations can even occur within the same individual! Chances are, your right foot doesn’t move exactly the same as your left foot. Your feet are the foundation to your body and these small variations have repercussions all the way up the biomechanical chain. They can cause issues such as:
- Localised foot, arch or heel pain
- Plantar Fasciitis (ie: heel pain or bone spur)
- Achilles Tendonitis
- Metatarsalgia (ie: pain in the ball of the foot)
- Flat Feet
- Recurring Ankle Sprains
- Morton’s Neuromas
- Shin Splints
- Knee Pain
- Hip Pain
- Back Pain
Your feet are the foundation to your body: shouldn’t your shoes fit and support your feet perfectly?
One way to customize your shoes is with custom foot orthotics that will support your body through every step. They are intended to fit comfortably in your shoe to improve the alignment and correction of the foot function to enhance the performance and biomechanics of your feet and body.
Orthotics have changed a lot over the years: the casting method, the examination process and the manufacturing have evolved making them thinner, stable, strong and they add very little weight to the shoe. Orthotics can be made for all sorts of different footwear such as soccer cleats, skates, ski boots, sandals and even high heels.
Creating a highly personalized health care experience, Byward Chiropractic Clinic has been helping patients with custom foot orthotics for over 6 years. The doctor will work with you to determine if foot orthotics are the right fit for you.
Your chiropractor will do a complete evaluation of your foot and ankle biomechanics and your gait. Your foot will be evaluated while seated, while standing and while walking. Your shoes will also be examined. Heel and sole wear and tear can tell a lot about your feet, your gait and how you distribute your weight. Your chiropractor will take a cast of your foot in a neutral position. The cast will be sent out to a local lab where the orthotics will be manufactured to your specification by a team of experts. The process typically takes 2 weeks. When your custom pair of orthotics is received at the clinic, the doctor will then fit them with you. You will be given specific instructions as to how to wear and care for your orthotics. Any modifications necessary can be promptly done at the lab.
Most extended health care plans include some coverage for custom made orthotics. Some insurance may require a medical doctor’s prescription.
By properly taking care of your feet, the rest of your body will thank you. Happy feet make for a happy, healthy body.
